Behind the Student Union: Expression and Thoughts

Ever since the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University Student Union (AMUSU), ideologically it was believed to act as a catalyst for student welfare and refine the process of administration. It was to work in close co-ordinance with A.M.U Administration. No doubt as the structure of A.M.U, Student Union comes to be dominated by Resident Hall Student who indeed did a lot for student welfare.

In the backdrop of 21st century with new objective, goals and issues, Student Union effectiveness come to be questioned especially after being suspended by our Vice-Chancellor on grounds of misconduct. Student Union was considered to be a democratic body but rumors always did rounds about political support behind various candidates. Misuse of authority like restoring to Dharnas for petty benefits, disturbing classes and causing problems to local aligarians, on contrary it is believed they were causing problems for administration who indulged in money-minting, misuse of UGC funds, even corruption charges were also levied against Student Union when it was restored last time around in 2005.

But keeping past aside, future doesn’t reflect the same with rigorous struggles we have won back our union, weather leaders deserved or not is issue irrelevant now. I do, agree that lot has been done this time around establishment of Central Placement Cell, Cultural fests, Student Interaction Program, improvement in living conditions of halls, really future does after a lots of hope. Recently, an International debate is also being organized by Student Union along with student interaction summit. We do believe that a lot more needs to be done but Student Union member needs to be complemented in their efforts but at the same time some disturbing news reach us. Mostly students complain that the leaders do not address their more immediate problems and are beyond their access. Student leaders and their friends exploit and threat the administration member for petty benefits. Moving above all this your invaluable comments are also invited.

Aligarh Muslim University: A Journey to APEX

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), no doubt it is one of the most academically oriented educational institutes in India, producing most feat-crushing talents like Nashruddin Shah, Javed Akhtar, Kapil Dev and Hamid Ansari who defined and changed the meaning and outlook of modern India. Be in any field science- arts, AMU Students set their own benchmarks. However, with dawn of new century changing perceptions of people, A.M.U has somewhat lagged behind in keeping up to its reputation of home of great talents, learners and achievers.

AMU legs behind in number of fields as compared to any other Indian University, be it lack of Central Placement Cell, Wi-Fi campus, on-board facilities for students, training facilities, orientation of teachers, weeding of outside influences, improving facilities in resident halls and some many problems are there. All this has lead to unrest among students and they tend to develop inferiority complex.

Few measures as a student, we feel could be taken to improve current situation are-
  • People from alumni and old boys associations should be given top administrative post as they are well aware of its culture, traditions and expectations of Aligarians.

  • Campus should be provided computers with Wi-Fi facilities to increase knowledge per student.

  • Authority should be bear this in mind that lots need to be done to improve current campus facilities, instead of opening outside campuses and transferring assets from here like books.

  • Placement Cell should be established and improved on-board facilities for students.

  • Canteen Facilities should also be provided to all faculties like the most important faculty i.e Department Of Commerce doesn’t have any canteen.

In the 21st Century, dreams of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and his intentions behind establishment of AMU most not be forgotten.
I hope we students as future policy makers would pay attention on this. If you have some more extra valuable suggestions you are most likely invited to comment here.
